Day 26 - June 10

Day 26 - June 10

Distance: 4.0 miles (6.4 km)

Croatia's Plitvice Lakes are a series of crystal-clear lakes and pools cascading down a limestone valley over countless waterfalls.  Sounds pretty neat, right?  It is.  We  spent the majority of the day walking through the park, starting at the top lake and working our way down to the big waterfall at the bottom.  It was like walking through an Enya music video.  The lakes are so crystal clear and full of so many fish, they're like giant aquariums.  When viewed from afar, each lake is a different shade of brilliant blue or green.  The waterfalls  seem to come from nowhere and flow everywhere, cascading out of the hillsides and forest, over the rock formations, and into the lakes.  The whole park is crisscrossed with boardwalk paths that everyone must follow (swimming and fishing are not allowed).  Since this is the most visited attraction in Croatia, the path can get a little crowded in spots, but the natural beauty of everything around you is so distracting and the roar of the waterfalls so strong, you barely notice the other people.  When we made it to the bottom of the park, I decided to run back up the valley and out of the park to where we were staying (instead of taking the trolley thing that takes you back up).  I shouldn't be running but it was very short, it was almost all uphill (so wouldn't be hard on my Achilles), and I couldn't help it.  How can you not take the opportunity to run through a place like Plitvice Lakes National Park?

After the park, we took the bus to Zagreb, Croatia's capital city.  I'll tell you more about that in the next post!
