Day 3 - May 18

Day 3 - May 18

Distance: 7.1

This was a day of relaxaton, recovery, rejuvenation, recreation - basically all of those re-words.  After waking up from my long slumber, I went for a very slow, easy run along the riverfront promenade, a bit on the west bank again, and through the old town, which was much, much less crowded than it was the day before during the Japanese festival.

The rest of the day, we just hung out with Laura and Fabian.  They made us eggs, toast, sausage, and baked beans for brunch (delicious!).  After we finished eating, we heard the familiar sounds of snare drums and flutes approaching in the distance (they had walked right under our window at 7am this morning, waking us all up very briefly).  We went out on the balcony, and sure enough, we were treated to an unexpected parade.  Apparenly all the varous clubs of Dusseldorf like to spend their Sunday afternoons wearing funny uniforms, playing all kinds of instruments, and marching in step.  We decided to go down on the street and watch.  What amazed me was that the majority of the people in the parade seemed to be under 6 yrs old or over 60 yrs old.  Their marching and musical abilities were all very impressive.

We then got some spaghetti ice cream (really delicious!), went to a park, went to a cafe where I tried some malt beer (nonalcoholic but just as delicious!), and spent the rest of the day hanging out in the apartment.  For supper, we had roast ham, white asparagus with a hollandaise, and potato cakes (all really, really wonderfully delicious!).  All in all, a delicious day.
